This week,  Merriam Mayor Ken Sissom and City council members hosted readings of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, with students in Merriam’s two elementary schools.  After the reading, kids received Energy Star Lorax-themed booklets and LED night lights.

City Council member Bryan Burks reads to students at Crestview Elementary.

And what did WE learn?

  1. Reading Dr. Seuss – with all his “smogulous smoke and cruffulous croak” phrases  is challenging.  Reading it to 250 kids is more so.
  2. These students were already up on the best ways to save energy – from turning off appliances to deciding what to eat before going to the fridge.
  3. Kids like winning almost as much as the adults do (huge raucous cheering accompanied the announcement of Merriam’s first place status).

With only 2 weeks to go in the Take Charge Challenge, these towns are pulling out all the stops to win. Stay tuned!

City councilmembers Nancy Hupp, Chris Evans Hands, and City planner Elliot Lahn distributed bulbs and booklets at Merriam Park Elementary.
